Classes for Adults (18+)

Chinese I – No prerequisites

Monday  6:00 – 7:30 p.m., January 22 – April 2 (10 Weeks)

Gain basic skills in greetings and self-introduction. The class will focus on learning Pinyin – the Mandarin phonetic system, and pronunciation. This class will not focus on Chinese characters. Ten classes, one class per week.

Chinese II – Prerequisite: Chinese I or able to satisfy assessment

Tuesday 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., January 23 – April 3 (10 Weeks)

Increase your skills in self-introduction. The class will continue working with Pinyin phonetics strengthening pronunciation. In this class you begin learning recognition and writing of basic characters forming a basis for understanding basic strokes in writing and character structure. Ten classes, one class per week.

Chinese III – Prerequisite: Chinese II or able to satisfy assessment

Wednesday 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., January 24 – April 4 (10 Weeks)

Learn to carry simple conversations, ask questions, and express likes and dislikes. You will also continue building on character recognition and writing skills, increasing the amount of characters you are able to use. Ten classes, one class per week.

Business Chinese I – Prerequisite: Chinese III or able to satisfy assessment

Thursday   6:00 – 7:30 p.m., January 25 – April 5 (10 Weeks)

Develop your language skills in the direction of basic business knowledge. Learn to converse about basic business transactions and begin to understand cross-cultural business communication. You will also continue building on character recognition and writing skills – including writing a simple email. Ten classes, one class per week.

Advanced Chinese – Prerequisite: Chinese III or able to satisfy assessment

Friday     6:00 – 7:30 p.m., January 26 – April 6 (10 Weeks)

Further increase your oral, listening, reading, and writing abilities in this Chinese only class. You will be challenged to discuss a variety of topics relating to work, travel, and everyday life. Ten classes, one class per week.

Intro to Chinese Painting and Calligraphy – No prerequisites

Wednesday   4:00 – 5:00 p.m., January 24 – April 4 ( 10 Weeks)

Interested in Chinese painting and calligraphy? Learn appreciation and basic painting and calligraphy skills. Ten classes, one class per week.

Intro to Zither (Guzheng) – No prerequisites

Tuesday   4:00 – 5:00 p.m., January 23 – April 3 (10 Weeks)

Gain appreciation for an ancient Asian musical instrument! Learn about its history and development – including short performances. Ten classes, one class per week.

Intro to Chinese Bamboo Flute (Dizi) – No prerequisites

Tuesday   4:00 – 5:00 p.m., January 23 – April 3 (10 Weeks)

Gain appreciation for a Chinese bamboo flute! Learn about its history and development – including short performances. Ten classes, one class per week.

 

Classes for Young Learners – At CICSU

Intermediate Chinese for Young Learners YCT I –  Prerequisite: Basic Chinese language speaking

Thursday   4:00 – 5:00 p.m., January 25 – April 5 (10 Weeks)

This course was developed for students with at least one year of previous Chinese immersion learning. YCT is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency to assess primary and middle school students’ ability to use Chinese as a second language in their daily and academic lives. The class focuses on learning the writing and speaking skills YCT I demands. Ten classes, one class per week.

Intermediate Chinese for Young Learners YCT II – Prerequisite: YCT I or able to satisfy assessment

Thursday   4:00 – 5:00 p.m., January 25 – April 5 (10 Weeks)

This course was developed for students with at least two years of previous Chinese immersion learning. YCT is an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency to assess primary and middle school students’ ability to use Chinese as a second language in their daily and academic lives. The class focuses on learning the writing and speaking skills YCT II demands. Ten classes, one class per week.

Play in Chinese – Prerequisite: Basic Chinese language speaking

Saturday    9:15 – 10:45 a.m., January 27 – April 7 (10 Weeks)

In this Chinese immersion course, everyone will have fun in Chinese – play games, sing and dance, watch fun movies in Chinese, make handicrafts and just be a kid in Chinese! Ten classes, one class per week.

Chinese for Young Learners – No prerequisites

Saturday     11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., January 27 – April 7 (10 Weeks)

This class opens the door to Chinese language and culture through a variety of activities, such as basic everyday conversation, folk songs, handicrafts and games. Students will gain basic skills in greetings and self-introduction, learn Pinyin – the Mandarin phonetic system, pronunciation and Chinese characters. Ten classes, one class per week.

Mandarin Chinese Club: Beginner – No prerequisites

Location A: Zach Elementary       Tuesday 3:45 – 4:45 p.m., January 23 – May 8 (15 Weeks)

Location B: Bennett Elementary  Wednesday 3:45 – 4:45 p.m., January 24 – May 9 (15 Weeks)

Have fun in Chinese with the Confucius Institute at CSU – play games, do crafts, and just be a kid in Chinese! Right from the start students learn to communicate, gain basic skills in greetings and self-introductions, and set the foundation for all bilingual language skills. Fifteen classes, one class per week.

Mandarin Chinese Club: Intermediate – Prerequisties Chinese Club: Beginner or able to satisy assessment

Location: Riffenburgh Elementary School, Pod A

Monday 3:35 – 4:30 p.m., January 22 – May 7 (15 Weeks)

Intermediate level instruction in Mandarin Chinese speaking, listening, reading and writing; introduction to composition and reading of simple written messages in Chinese. This class covers sports, directions, hobbies, daily routines, animals, the environment and more. Fifteen classes, one class per week.

Mandarin Chinese Club: Advanced – Prerequisites Chinese Club: Intermediate or able to satisify assessment

Location: Zach Elementary School

Tuesday 3:45 – 4:45 p.m., January 23 – May 8 (15 Weeks)

In this Chinese immersion course, students are instructed to maximize their abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese. Each lesson features sections on vocabulary, exercises, character practice, and a reading challenge. After this class, students will be able to conduct conversations related to their daily life in a clear and colorful manner.
